Hector Black lost his daughter when she was murdered by an intruder. His
recording describes the terrible sense of loss, the horrific circumstances
of her death, and the compassion and forgiveness he was able to find. This
recording is incredibly powerful and offers an insight into the death
penalty in a way that is seldom covered by mainstream media.

Inspired by the recent success of our brothers and sisters who achieved
abolition this year in New Jersey, we will begin the journey toward
Abolition 2009 on March 1st at 7:00PM with an exciting event at the Langston
Hughes Performing Arts Center. Because we must understand our past to move
beyond it and because the goals of those who seek racial justice and
abolition of the death penalty are so intertwined, we are presenting:
Modern Lynchings ~ Race and the Death Penalty.

The evening will present renowned musical talent as well some of this
nation's leading scholars on the persistent role that race plays in deciding
who lives and who dies . One of the highlights of the evening will
certainly be Christina Swarns of the NAACP Criminal Defense Fund. Ms.
Swarns has defended numerous death row inmates including the successful DNA
exoneration of Nicholas Yarris, on death row for 21 years. She also argued
on appeal that race discrimination infected the trial of Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Joining Ms. Swarns will be Jeffrey Robinson, this State's finest criminal
defense lawyer, who will detail how a local prosecutor secured a death
sentence for Jonathan Gentry, an African-American man prosecuted in Kitsap
County, by appealing to the racial fears of his all-white jury.

We are also excited to present the musical talent of Jared Clifton, lead
singer of the Radio Nationals, singer/songwriter Carla Torgeson from the
Walkabouts, the Immaculate Conception Gospel Choir, as well as a few
surprises!

We are asking for a donation of $25 per person. Tickets will be on sale at
the event or you may purchase them now online (safe & secure):
http://www.abolishdeathpenalty.org/2008Event.htm. Directions to the event
are also online at: http://www.abolishdeathpenalty.org/2008Dir.htm. For

3. Prosecutor decides against the death penalty in Graham, WA slayings.

(Seattle, 2/13/08) A man accused of killing his neighbors in rural Graham
last November, just months after he was freed from prison, will not face
execution in exchange for a guilty plea.

Pierce County Prosecutor Gerald Horne announced Wednesday that he would not
seek the death penalty for Daniel Tavares Jr., 41, if the man follows
through with an agreement to plead guilty.

Tavares is charged with two counts of aggravated murder in the shooting
deaths of Brian Mauck, 30, and his wife, Beverly, 28. He faces life in
prison with no chance of parole.

The Maucks' relatives said they were pleased with the decision.

"Now we can just look forward to our memories instead of having to relive
this nightmare," said Beverly Mauck's mother, Karen Slater.
