1. 2007 Conference & Annual Meeting (Please Note the New Date!)

This year's conference will be on October 27th at Seattle University Law
School (room number to be announced). Doors will open at 9:00AM (with
beverages and a small selection of breakfast items). Conference will run
from 9:30AM to 11:30AM. This year's focus will be on constitutional
challenges to the methods of execution--focusing on hanging and lethal
injection, the two methods used in Washington. Our faculty features Todd
Maybrown, an attorney who previously challenged hanging (in Rupe) and is
about to file the first attack on lethal injection in this state.

This subject is particularly timely, given the 9th Circuit's decision today
affirming Darold Stenson's death sentence. Unless the 9th Circuit
reconsiders, Stenson will likely have an execution date set soon. So, we
need to educate ourselves and mobilize to prevent another killing in our
name.

The annual meeting will follow the conference. All our invited to
attend--we'll be electing officers and selecting members of the steering
committee.

President, WCADP Steering Committee

2. 9th Circuit of Appeals

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed Darold Stenson's conviction and
death sentence on Monday. This likely means that Stenson will have an
execution date set in the near future, unless the 9th Circuit decides to
reconsider or if the United States Supreme Court decides to take the case.
It is possible, however, that any date will be stayed until the
constitutional issues surrounding lethal injection are resolved.

Stenson was convicted and sentenced to death in 1994 for the murder of his
wife, Denise Stenson, and his business partner, Frank Hoerner. In this
latest appeal, Stenson claimed that he should have been appointed different
counsel at trial, given that Stenson wanted to prove his innocence, but his
attorney told the jury that he was guilty. The trial judge also blocked
Stenson's efforts to put on testimony regarding the impact that Stenson's
execution would have on his children. The 9th Circuit upheld the state
courts on both grounds.

Stenson's case is one of three Washington death penalty case currently
pending in the 9th Circuit--the next to last stop in the appellate process.
