To Our Members:
 
I am saddened to report that both of our bills (to create a commission to
study the death penalty and to ban executing individuals who are severely
mentally ill) failed when neither made it out of committee.  While we raised
awareness, we did not raise enough hands.  To read more about the temporary
demise of these bills and what we all can do to change the result next term
please go to our blog: abolishcapitalpunishment.blogspot.com.  Let me extend
my personal thanks to everyone who worked so hard on these issues.  Your
efforts were not in vain.   We stood up to be counted:not in our names.
Others will stand with us next time.  
 
Next, our annual dinner/awards ceremony and now concert performance was held
last night before a capacity house at the Triple Door.  Jon Langford took us
through his personal journey from a soccer loving boy growing up in Wales,
to punk rocker, to country artist, to abolitionist--proving that there are
many journeys to the same destination.  The great success of the dinner was
the many new faces that showed up.  Many thanks to the numerous volunteers
that worked countless hours creating and sending out invites, organizing,
making posters and publicizing, and running the event.  This could not have
happened without your efforts.  
 
Our bills failed because politicians view us a special interest group.
Success will follow once they realize we are not a special interest group,
but rather represent the will of the majority.  However, we need to wake up
the many, many people who don't realize that they are abolitionists, yet.
We woke some up last night and will wake up many more in the days that
follow.
