Dear friends and family,

As you can see from the subject line, this message is about the death
penalty. If that is a subject which doesn't interest you, please feel free
to delete now. If you would like to learn more about the movement to
abolish the death penalty and my involvement, read on. For an in-depth look
at my motivation, see the attached statement.

On June 29th, 1972, The Supreme court struck down the existing death penalty
statutes in the U. S. in the case of Fuhrman vs.. Georgia. What seemed like
a victory for those who favor abolition, was only a temporary cessation.
The Court had not ruled that the death penalty violated the Constitution,
only that the existing laws need to be changed. July 2nd will mark the 30th
anniversary of the Gregg vs.. Georgia decision which gave states the green
light to resume executions under their new laws.

For several years, an organization called the Abolition Action Committee has
held a fast and vigil at the Supreme court, called Starvin' for Justice,
from June 29th through July 2nd. Last year I was able to attend for three
days of the event which involved informational picketing, giving leaflets to
passers-by, gathering signatures for a petition to establish a moratorium on
executions, and a number of speakers.

I won't be able to attend this year, but I will be keeping a fast in support
of those gathered in Washington D. C. I am asking you to do whatever you
feel you can to support this effort. Fast, pray, ask your governor to
establish a moratorium, ask your legislators to repeal their death penalty
laws, ask the Supreme Court Justices to face the fact that the death penalty
is "cruel and unusual" and as such is in violation of the eighth amendment.

Thank you very much.

Peace

Dave Avolio
