Hello Glenn,
This site is too good to believe!
I was looking for some stuff that I need for my spectroscopy experiments.
Measuring an emission spectrum gives you much better results when you do it
at low temperature. Liquid nitrogen being an excellent coolant, but at
-190°C most mineral species will crack and decrepitate upon immersion. Dry
ice is much more affordable and still gets you to -80°C.
Okay, you can easily buy a few pounds of that but even when you store it in
a Styrofoam box but it will evaporate in a matter of a day or so. That is
where the aerogel comes in. A box made of that stuff would keep dry ice
cold for days!
Another thing that I need for fluorescence spectroscopy is a nitrogen
ultraviolet-laser. Buying one is out of the question but a homemade model
is certainly within our reach. I only need a power source that delivers a
few 10,000 volts. To my amazement decided that you mentioned cells those as
well as Van de Graaff generators. At ridiculously low prices, I may add.
Yet another project that I've been brooding on its cathodoluminescence. The
major problem being that you need specialized glassware and a vacuum pump.
Guess what? They sell that too.
But then, ouch, that the phrase: "we don't ship outside the USA".
Otherwise, fantastic site :-) :-) :-)
Cheers Axel
