Just a sidenote about Anthracite. My wife's ancestor, Phillip Ginder,
discouvered anthracite coal just outside of Summit Hill, Pa in 1791. He
was a miller, and was out looking for new stone to make into mill
stones. He saw this shiny black rock and didn't know what it was, but
he had a feeling it was inportant. He showed it to a "friend" of his
who said if he showed where he found it, Phillip would get a section of
land (which he never did get). Thus was formed the Lehigh Coal and
Navigation Company in Mauch Chauk (Now Jim Thorpe, PA). The city of
Summit Hill, PA still pays tribute to Phillip Ginder by naming a high
school and park after him. They also have "Phillip Ginder Days"
celebration yearly.
