Penfield quarry is a good collecting site, as well. Last I knew, it
was open only once a year to members of the Mineral Society of the
Rochester Academy of Science.
If you're into fossils, the bed of the Genesee river in Rochester is
apparently famous (I dunno - I'm not a fossil person) and on occasion
the water flow has been cut to allow study by professionals. There are
other places around Rochester, but my memory fails me.
There is a lot of good collecting in the areas north and east of
Syracuse.
