Melanie,
Welcome to the list. It is a great resource. Since I live in
Massachusetts, the only Montana locality I have visited is the Snowbird Mine
in Mineral County, MT. The collecting season there runs from mid-July
through Labor day. Very unusual minerals and magnificent scenery. I have
pictures from two trips I made there last year on the Boston Mineral Club
website at http://www.bostonmineralclub.org/docs/2008-snowbird/page-01.htm
As far as the Walworth locality, it is operated by the Dolomite Products
Group aggregate. They have an open house once per year, usually in early
October. In my opinion the real prizes from there are the clear "ice-cube"
fluorite crystals. Nearly every vug contains dolomite crystals and one can
also find calcite, selenite, sphalerite and celestite. For photos of
minerals from the quarry go to http://www.mindat.org/gallery.php?loc=18146
Unfortunately its only open one day per year and its a long way to go from
Montana for 5 hours of collecting.
Again welcome to the Rockhounds list.
best regards,
Nate Martin
