There is an Indian microscope  maker on eBay that offers a semi-poor man's alternative which works with a regular compound scopes. Its $99 with free shipping.  It sits on the stage and the second polarizing filter fits over eyepiece. Sorry I can't send the link but go to eBay and search the item number.

As to swapping sockets, microscope bulbs are made specifically for microscope applications. They have to conduct heat away from the optic path and the filament design prevents reflections that a normal bulb would transmit through the optics
