Magma appears to be doing something similar... when during eruptions, the
magma in a volcanic pipe gets nearer to the surface, the pressure becomes
low enough for gases to exsolve. This forms bubbles in the magma which
lowers the specific gravity of the magma in the upper part of the pipe. This
again relieves pressure from the underlying parts of the pipe so they can
"foam". It's a chain reaction.

matter of the earth's crust is still orbiting the planet as a result of the
explosion of the Eifel caldera ... I guess the moon is reasonably safe.
Maybe the far side?
