[Rockhounds] BLM & Forest Service Geocommunicator: Do you use it?

Hi David,
I'm not really sure what you are referring to exactly about mines and
mine data not being in Geocommunicator, but thought I might clarify a
point.
Geocommunicator does not list mines, unless I've been missing
something. It lists mining records which includes mining claims, plans
of operation, leases, sales and the like that the BLM has active or
inactive records of. Most of the old mines had no recordation or
permitting through the federal government and thus have no record for
Geocommunicator. Of course, if an old mine has an active claim or
recent (post 1976) inactive claim, then it will be there, the claim
record will be available, not necessarily "the mine."
If you know of an active mine on federal land, thus there should be an
active claim and an active plan of operations, then that should be in
Geocommunicator. If not, then it would indicate that the records have
not yet all made it to the digital world and I can't find anything in
the information that explains if it is all supposed to be available or
if some of the data is still being transferred to digital records.
Regards,
Lanny
