Veva,
Years ago I picked up an old laboratory balance, two pan, that can be
mounted on a lab stand and be elevated. I made a little wire jig that
snaps over one of the pans so I can hang a specimen below the pan for
weighing in water. Works great for taking specific gravity. The best
part was that the old laboratory balance only cost me $10 (I spent a
whole lot more upgrading to a complete set of accurate masses). I
think it was made in the 1930s, and it will probably outlast me. Those
old cast iron and brass units with porcelain trays and agate balances
are practically unbreakable if you use at least a minimum of care. They
also are accurate to a milligram if you have good masses. If you are
looking for cheap, it is a good alternative to consider.
Oh, and before you get fancy, don't forget about streak and hardness.
Often the simple tests are enough.
