Welcome Home Kitty & Bill. Looking forward to your travel tales!
Kitty, hope you heal quickly!

Question: Any recommendations for stopping on a trip west on I-40 to
California? Won't have a chance to stop until Tennessee, and can't
stray too much from I-40 so I get to Cali on time for my son's wedding
in Los Angeles. (John Doppler). Too bad it's summer because there
are tons of places in the Mojave I'd love to go back to, but not this
time of year! There will also be a short jaunt up to Chico and
Sacramento, CA at some point.

I'm taking my time coming home, probably early September. Most likely
main route east is starting from I-40 again, or I-10. Only plans on
the way back are to stop at the White Sands National Monument for
picture-taking (opens Sept. 8), and to play at the Crater of Diamonds
State Park in Arksansas.

I will be in my little old 2WD pickup and have my metal detector
along, gold pan and trusty spray bottle. I don't know if I left my
screens in CA in storage with other things or if I gave them away
before I left. Easy enough to make one though. Hard rock mining is not
possible, unfortunately.

I'll be taking other shorter trips in the future, heaven willing, but
this will be my last solo trip cross-country. So folks, what
are your suggestions?
