Hi Aaron,
11 years hm?...
I would go for a major in English ... later, when you're a professor, you
can teach other young people to be eloquent. You seem to be a natural in
that field ;-)))
Also: professors have lots of free time during school vacations, haven't
they? Lots of time to go rockhounding!
Should you pursue a career in geology it might be interesting to look at
chemistry and physics too. The real 'hands-on geologists' are becoming an
extinct race rather quickly.
To answer your question: I rolled into mineral collecting at the age of 14.
My uncle gave me a box of minerals that because from a gas station (if I
recall right it were Brazilian minerals and the gas station was British
Petroleum). The rocks were absolutely worthless chunks of stone but the be
immediately got my attention.
The real fun started when I found out that some rocks fluoresce under a
simple blocklight. Now I only collect fluorescent minerals and I have tons
of fun doing that!
