Hi Aaron,
I first became interested in rocks & minerals through a friend in high school, and have now been collecting for about 60 years. My interest caused me to learn more and more chemistry and physics, and that's what I wound up doing for a living- I was a chemist in the plastics industry. I never did anything with minerals except collect them as an amateur until I retired. I then started selling micro minerals on the internet.
My knowledge of minerals did come in handy in my professoinal work from time to time, though. I found, as you will, that all the sciences are related, and it helps to be familiar with as many branches of science as you can.
And above all, never stop asking questions!
