Shawn: Oklahoma is noted for 2 minerals that are relatively easy and safe
and fun for a youngster to collect. These are the Selenite blades and
groups, from near Jet, and the "Roses" of Barite, dug near Norman. I don't
have exact directions, but maybe someone on the list does, or you can try
the Web.
Those are abundant in the right places, and don't involve a lot of hard rock
breaking or mining. But you can get really dirty, especially digging out the
Selenites. which involve holes of muddy water, etc.
If you don't have any luck finding directions, or better information, from
these great Rockhound Group members, get back to me, and I will dig for them
(no pun intended!)..........
Larry

Hello,
My name is Shawn. I am a homeschool mom of a 10yr old Geologist in the
making. I joined the group via an invite from the list owners. I'm just
looking for ideas, information, and a place to share my son's adventures in
rockhounding. We are studying rocks, minerals, gems and almost anything
geology related. We live in Oklahoma and are interested in finding others in
the area that share the same interests. Anyone on the list from Oklahoma?
Thanks
Shawn
