Jeanette and I had the opportunity this weekend to go on a shark tooth expedition with a group from the Alabama Paleontological Society.

The site is about 3 hours from our home and is on the Conecah River in the south part of Alabama.

The owner is the Alabama Electric Cooperatives according to the signs.

There are several layers of clay and fossiliferous glauconitic<sp?> sand.

The target shark teeth are Eocene, eroding from glauconitic<sp?> sand material.

The teeth and ray plates are very small but plentiful. Assorted other fossils (living and ancient) were also found at the site in the river. A few fossil alligator or crocodile teeth, fossil fish bones, and ancient corals were also collected

A few of the collectors, this writer inlcluded, could be considered living fossils. Also, some of the creepy crawly creatures living amongst the rocks look very much like some of the ancient swamp creatures.

I was happy to see several youth involved in collecting at the site. 2 of my grandaughters were included in this younger set.

Pictures on ning soon.
