We collected there early last Summer, and really enjoyed it. The
Forest Service has done a great job of creating a rockhound-friendly
site.
There were two "rangers" on duty who took your fee and passed out
screens and answered questions.
The day we were there it was fairly busy, with lots of family groups
and a busload from a church seniors group. The parking area is a short
walk from the collecting area.
The garnet bearing material has been brought to the site and you only
need to dig, carry buckets, and shake, then wash your screenings in a
flume.
The water is re-cycled into a pond, so by the end of the day it 's
pretty thick with mud.
If I were returning ( as I hope to do soon ) I'd build a screen frame
on legs so we could work more efficiently. Working with the small hand-
held screens provided is pretty slow.
Get there early and find a shady spot to work in. Bring lots of sun
screen and cold drinks.
Ping me off-list if I can answer any questions.
