The forecast for tomorrow is 15 degrees, with 4-8 inches of snow, here
in West Michigan. My wife and I are going to brave the elements, drive
five miles, and go to balmy 50 degree weather 85 feet underground in
the Alabastine Mine in the morning.
The Tulip City Club arranged this trip, led by Geology Professor Kevin
Cole at GVSU. Selenite, pencil gypsum, alabaster, shark coprolites,
teeth, and spines. BTW, I'm arranging a second trip with Dr. Cole for
the Indian Mounds Club (with similar reciprocal arrangement with Tulip
City) in another month or two.
It is really a pleasure to have to dig out the hard hats, buckets,
flashlights, safety glasses, hammers, and chisels, in the middle of
winter. Gypsum may only be Moh's 2, but it is still hard rock mining.
Tomorrow is going to be fun!
