Carolyn,

I think we have to assume that John knows how to test for hardness, even 
after a few beers. I would think if it was a surface coating he would 
have also tested the underlying material which is also exposed. If Tim 
says it looks like some Oregon material he most likely is right. The 
material I referenced was from New York just to show the form of 
botryoidal  travertine (calcite)  On the other hand if you know more 
about John's drinking habits than I do, I apologize. .
