[Rockhounds] Gemstones in a War Zone...

Hi all,
I get the bring-back-from-Afghanistan (and elsewhere) queries a couple times
a year; they immediately make my heart sink and set off the alarm bells.A
few months back a Canadian soldier called to ask would I look at a rough
emerald he had brought back from Afghanistan. My first question was how did
he get it. An Afghani friend had given it to him. Well that was at least a
little promising; a no-money transaction would enhance the chance - albeit
still slight - that the article might be genuine. Upon arrival he took out
of his pocket a champagne cork size dirty green "stone," conchoidally
fractured, bubbles and swirls all through it, the most obvious piece of
bottle glass you'd ever want to see. It happens all the time.
