Hi Kreigh et al,
This concept, TOUR OF THE BASEMENTS was described in an USA Gem and Mineral
Club Bulletin many years ago and I "transplanted" the idea to South Africa.
We do this as one of our monthly rockhunts about every second year within
the Pretoria Gem and Mineral Club. (On average we have at least one outing -
sometimes two, per month, except December). A thorough time-table is drawn
up for this event, taking into considersation "viewing" time and '"travel"
time between homes. We normally do not more than three homes on a Sunday
morning, sometimes finishing off with a barbeque at the Clubhouse. The
group meets (in their own vehicles) at the starting home, spends 30 - 45
minutes there before proceeding to the next venue. We try and bring in as
much as possible, various aspects of the hobby. Thus minerals, cabbing
and/or tumbling, silversmithing are the areas we normally cover, but have
included faceting, micromounting and objet d'art at some stage or other. We
normally request members to book for this tour, as invariably the
hostess/host will offer some refreshments during the short stay.
It is surprising what knowledge newer members in the Club can pick up in the
course of a morning and it is always enlightening to see what your fellow
Club members keep themselves busy with.
Horst
PS. As Kreigh mentioned, this is a good excuse for one to clear up and
spruce up your home and/or basement.
