That Rutgers mineral sale looked a little sparse as compared to other years but there were still several goodies that I grabbed. One was a large dark vivianite from Cameroon.? I was used to the smaller specimen in fossil shells so this was a required acquisition.? smkell

To the group,
The last notable specimen I acquired was at the Rutgers University New
Brunswick, NJ Geology Open House in January.
I am usually on the hunt for feldspar but this 3"x4' calcite crystal group
from Roseclair, Illinois was unusual. I didn't realize how fine a specimen
it was until I studied it under my microscope at home. One of the geology
open house mineral sale workers commented on it being etched by fluids. To
the naked eye that is what it looked to be. Instead each crystal is a clean
stairstep structure built block by block I don't believe etching could
create what I am seeing.. It is amazing and looks like an Escher drawing. I
have never seen this habit on any mineral but it looks like the stairstep
drawings by Hauy. The lesson.... is don't be narrow in your search
....something amazing is around the corner.
