Hi Kreigh et al,
A few hours ago, I returned from our 42nd GEMBOREE (am the only person who
has attended all 42) organised this year by the Natal Mineral and Gem
Society (on behalf of the Federation of Southern African Gem and
Mineralogical Socities), so only latching on to this subject at a a later
stage.
The mineral is definitely stichtite and the green mineral is serpentine. We
have collected this material on various occassions at Kaapse Hoop (near
Nelspruit in the Mpumalanga Province (known as Eastern Transvaal before
1994). There are two other localities in the world whewre this mineral is
found - Tasmania has already been mentioned, the other locality is somewhere
in Canada. (At this point in time cannot check on the exaxt locality as
everything has been packed away at three different localities, as two weeks
ago we have moved to a Retirement Centre, after living for 47 years in our
house in Groenkloof, Pretoria) Prof. Bruce Cairncross wrote an article on
stichtite, which was published in the South African Lapidary Magazine, and a
copy of this issue is somewhere amongst the 480 baxes that I packed my
minerals, books, magazines and correwspondence in.
We collect this mineral in a road cutting between Barberton and Kaapse Hoop,
Which is about 250 km East of Pretoria.
Regards,
Horst
