Stichtite (named after Robert Carl Sticht, manager of the Mt Lyell Copper Mine, Tasmania in the late 1800s and early 1900s) is found in ultramafic rocks at a number of locations around the world. The most famous are the Dundas, Tasmania deposits (type locality) and the Barberton district in South Africa. In recent years, the Stichtite Hill deposit at Dundas has been worked for material that has been carved and polished and lots of it made available to market. The deposit is mined by Mike and Eleanor Phelan who also mine crocoite specimens from the nearby Dundas Extended mine. Don, some of it can take quite a high polish. I particularly like specimens where the stichtite surrounds relict chromite crystals. The colour combination of purple stichtite and various green serpentine minerals can be very attractive.
