[Rockhounds] Database template?

Ahhh, so logically, I should store the path of the image, and then build
some .asp pages or whatever to display the picture with the data? THAT I
know how to do - lol. Or perhaps Access just displays those...I know that
SQL server doesn't.

Sadly, no, I don't know what normalization is. I'm a generalist and can
write some very complex queries, but I work in databases for 2 days, web
scripting for 10 days, creating images/etc. for 5 days, doing tech support
for 3 days, then perhaps back to a database for a day...you get the idea.

I'll look it up, though. Always good to learn new stuff. Generally, I create
pretty efficient tables in SQL server when I have to...but that's SQL
server, which is *mostly* built for efficiency.

So far as how big this thing will be - lol - I haven't a clue. We have lots
of stuff, from yard rocks to exquisite cabinet specimens, most of which
we've collected ourselves...probably a much larger count of yard rocks than
cabinet specimens, if you see what I mean.

My thought - and always my thought where technology is concerned - is to
build stuff as fast as it can be while be as expandable as you will likely
need. (I still try to keep webpage sizes, max, wherever possible, at 2-3
rings of a telephone at dial up speed - 40k-60k.) So I'd rather err on the
large side and as efficient as possible, instead of having to redo it later.
One nice thing about using Access is (John, I love ya, honest) that John is
likely to change his mind about what mineral information he wants stored,
and Access is fairly easy to modify.

I spend quite a bit of time on MSDN for other reasons...I'll take a peek.

Thanks!

Julie

You just pick the right variable type for photos, it's actually better to
store photos out of the db and just store the address of the photos. I'd
have to dig thru the help files on MSDN but it isn't hard to do.

It is very important to thing thru the table structure before building the
db tho. I don't know if you are familiar with normalization but using at
least a couple of levels of normalized tables is a good idea. If you expect
this to be a moderately large db, for smaller db's it really doesn't make a
lot of difference.

I think I only have the current version of access on this computer and I'm
off to the NAS Jacksonville airshow tomorrow or I might be able to set
something up for you easily.
