Carol,
Yes, you are correct with your observations about the jasper from Morgan
Hill, California and yes, the piece pictured could be from Lavic. Some of
the jasper from Morgan Hill can get very red, though not much of it. The
Lavic locality could be a good candidate for the locality as well, though in
my youth when I was walking around at the Lavic locality I didn't find much
red "jasp agate", though there was certainly some. The point I was making is
that I don't think there is any locality in the SW United States where any
quantity of this material can be found. Probably it will never be known
where that red bit of agate/jasper came from unless you could trace it back
to the guy who picked it up.
I see that Justin has introduced himself to the group. He was never one to
hide his light under a bushel, perhaps carbon arc, might describe it better.
The big mineral warehouse he used to work at was at my company, Jewel Tunnel
Imports. The things Justin writes are often of the quality to stimulate
controversy and few would mistake him as an author likely to generate a
well-reasoned impartial article for Wikipedia. I once though he was a bit
like a child who has just demonstrated a horrible new use of the microwave
and the family cat.
