As an addendum to a recent thread, I'll report a recent experience.   
I've just started using Super Iron Out to remove iron stains, and was  
having good luck with it.  I had a specimen of hemimorphite that had  
some thin but stubborn iron/clay stains on it.  I figured "Hey, it's  
a silicate, right? Should be safe".  Put it in a solution of Super  
Iron Out, but forgot it and left it overnight.  When I checked it  
again, the stain was gone.  So was half the hemimorphite!  As they  
say, test it with something you can afford to lose!
