Dear all,

The new mineral tazieffite (IMA 2008-12) has been recently approved by
International Mineralogical Association. This is a rare sulfosalt with
a complex composition Pb10Cd(As,Bi)11S25Cl5, which grows at high
temperature volcanic fumaroles. The name of the mineral is after
Haroun Tazieff (Warszawa, May 11, 1914 - Paris, February 6, 1998)
famous volcanologist who was a pioneer in field observation of active
volcanoes. He was not a mineralogist, but he devoted his life for
volcanic gas studying. The new mineral forms as a sublimates directly
from volcanic gases, so it will be a good memorial for a man and a
scientist like him.

The only known location of the mineral is so far Kamchatka peninsula,
Mytnovsky volcano.

Ragards,
Michael Zelenski <zelen at iem.ac.ru>
