Thank you all for your recommendations.
Looks like sand calcites are off collecting limits and the geological
phenomenon of Devil's Tower is worth the lengthy detour.
I will attempt to look at the tower by satellite picture (can do
virtual fly-over?).

The sand calcites at Rattlesnake Butte are on a National Natural
Landmark (NNL) closed to collecting.
