The grits are probably used with the sphere/egg cutter. Most such
machines use loose grits.
Grit sizes are formally standardized by a wire mesh (read screen). The
number of wires per inch defines the grit number. Wire sizes shrink as
the grit number increases; the holes get smaller with bigger numbers.
Practically, elutriation is usually used to sort grit sizes instead of
screens.
80 grit has particles of roughly .0075 inch. 120 is about .005 inch. 220
is about .0025 inch. 600 is about .001 inch. Aluminum Oxide pre-polish
is about .0004 inch.
