[Rockhounds] seeking info on official political locality data

Hi all,

I know the subject looks a little weird, but there is only so much room 
for a subject... what I am seeking is the official U.S. gov't listing of 
worldwide locality names, in which each successive level of political 
subdivision is categorized and has a name.  For example, we would have

COUNTRY: United States STATE: Nevada COUNTY: Smith CITY: Jonesville

or

COUNTRY: Switzerland CANTON: Bonne Terre CITY: Froufrou

I thought it was maintained by the State Department, and I've seen it 
before--posted by one of the list members--but I can't find it.
