Chuck,

I usually stick small, sequentially numbered, paper labels on with 
washable elmer's glue, but sometimes I use polyurethane.

One other suggestion I have seen that works is white-out, a fine felt 
tip pen, and a (liberal) drop of (glossy) polyurethane over the top (to 
seal it in).
