I always carry a roll of bright flagging tape to mark things.  I also 
have a long piece of pink flagging tape tied to the lanyard of my GPS 
since I lost a $350 black Garmin III+ on Mica Mountain.

I'm not sure if I've seen "pink flagging tape" on anyone's list of 
essential field tools, but a roll is small and lightweight and I use it 
a lot.
