Robert,

At a stretch, a very long stretch at that, I would say it *can* be 
done. But you'd need a lot of cabbing/lapidary experience in order to 
do it with anything like a useable outcome. And if you had that 
experience, most likely you wouldn't do it. It's somewhat like building 
the Titanic out of matchstcks. Yes it can be done, but why?

On a more helpful note I'd suggest the first step in the process, 
whatever device you end up using, would be to get a good lapidary 
how-to book. I'm not sure if I have the title right title but look for 
something like "Gemcutting for Amateurs" by the late John Sinkankas. 
Anything by Sinkankas is first rate. He was gifted in explanatory 
writing in a way that very few can equal.
