Wet the mask! That will increase its filtering capabilities.
Be aware, Jeanette, that there is no use putting the mask on if you have a
beard, mustache or large whiskers.
Oh well, I was addressing the male part of the list naturally...
They teach you that in the military service. Before we had to go into the
teargas container, the sergeant had put a chair and shaving gear next to the
entrance. He said that he would gladly and free of charge remove any facial
hair from us grunts. Remember that this was the period that spawned "Hair!",
Flower Power, The Beatles... There was a tendency to allow beard and
mustaches in the army, which would have been unthinkable 10 years earlier.
We politely declined the offer and were seen, half an hour later, fleeting
the container vomiting, coughing, gasping for air.
The mask that we wore were tightly fitting rubber gasmasks. A cotton mask
with a nose clip or a rubber band is something to sooth your fears, not
protect your lungs.
It may work for just "rock" but if there's anything toxic in there...
