Hi Teresa,

My Dad had a very rare form of leukemia, CMML, and was admitted to a
clinical study at the M D Anderson Cancer Center. You can rest assured
that your family will receive the best and most advanced care possible.
I spent many hours there with Dad and my brother (who worked in NW
Houston at the time) and the staff at all levels were highly skilled,
friendly and compassionate.

Regarding collecting, as several others have already mentioned, Houston
itself is on many feet of sediment from eons of erosion, so bedrock is a
long ways away in the immediate area. But there are a couple of really
nice rocks shops, not too far from the Anderson Center, and just a
little ways north you get into an area where there is a lot of petrified
palm wood, which I understand is quite attractive. Jeanne's Rock Shop

5420 Bissonnet in Bellaire TX, which is a little city inside Houston.
Call 713-664-2988 and get directions to visit them, they're great
folks.

Also, partly because of the oil industry, there are a ton of geologists
around Houston, which has resulted in (1) the Houston Museum of Natural
History having one of the best mineralogical collections and displays in
the world and (2) the Houston Gem and Mineral Society having probably
the best equipped and most experienced membership of any rockhound club
anywhere. 281 530-0942 or www.hgms.org.

I hear that up around College Station there's a bridge over the Brazos
River, at a county line, where you can collect on the river bank.
Interestingly, it's called the Whiskey Bridge, because Texas A&M
students went there fropm dry county to buy booze. I have a nice
selenite that a cousin gave me that they collected from the Brazos River
bank during low water.

Best of luck with all the medical issues you guys will have to deal
with. The folks at MD Anderson are the best!
