More free advice:
Check roadcuts and natural embankments for interesting rocks.
Check creekbeds and gravel bars, especially in dry western states, for a
pretty good idea of what might be upstream (anywhere), although soft
stones, and petrified wood, don't "travel" well (not far).
If you find interesting "float", like chips of petrified wood on a
hillside, follow them uphill to try finding the source.
Some of my favorite places, where I even take or direct other people
now, I found myself by a combination of maps and "scouting" the area,
literally making stops when driving or biking to check what was on the
ground.
