[Rockhounds] Collecting techniques questions

Accumulate the literature relevant to your area, from the rockhound guides
to all the geology papers to the mining history. Tons and tons of info is
out there if you put in the time to dig it out. Understand the geology, and
what is found in which rocks. Look for contacts, where one rock type meets
another.

Bear in mind that most stuff of any value, that is on the surface, has
already been found. Hang around wherever claims are registered, study the
maps, and you'll pick up some interesting info. A bit of this or that
element might have warranted a claim; perhaps not enough was there to mine
but there's enough to form some interesting minerals. Befriend local
geologists and prospectors, exlain what mineral collecting is, and show them
fabulous crystals; to most of them it's a foreign concept, all they're after
is ore and rocks.

Work the known local collecting sites hard. Lots of interesting things
remain overlooked because most rockhounds are quite casual collectors. If
you know how to move rock, and are willing to put at least a few days of
work into a site, you can find great stuff.

Cheers,
