Carrie Rodriguez was stunningly uninteresting when I saw her open
for Lucinda Williams last winter ...

Even though I perfectly timed my arrival at the venue to miss both Carrie
and Hayes Carll, I did get the opportunity to say hello to both of them in the
lobby after the show.

And Carrie did play with Alejandro for about 90% of the set. He opened with
a couple of hard rockers, then she came out for the rest of the set, and the
energy stayed pretty high until he did two songs from "By The Hand Of The
Father". She added a lot to it, and from the look on her face you could tell she
was having a good time rocking out for a change.

I have seen Alejandro a dozen times or more, and this was the most hard
rocking set I have ever heard. He has a lot of healthy energy, the band is
awesome (Hector Munoz is a monster drummer...), and the new songs work really well
in a live setting. The initial set was short, under 75 minutes, and focused
heavily on the new album, but they did a 5 song encore of a few old tunes and a
couple of covers - "All The Young Dudes" and "Beast Of Burden". I can think
of about 500 Rolling Stones songs I like better than "Beast...", but
obviously he loves it. It was the only low point of the night IMHO.

It was great to see Alejandro in a decent sized auditorium instead of a
club, and he seemed to be enjoying himself signing stuff for the long line of
fans in the lobby. The crowd was decent, 500-600 people, maybe more, and the
hardcore fans were all over the place.

I ran into Patterson Hood and spoke to him briefly, hadn't seen him out in
Atlanta in a long time. He said a new documentary about the DBT's will be
coming to theaters hopefully in January or so, and will likely make the rounds of
the film festivals. He told me some funny Dan Penn stories as well.

It was a great show, and Alejandro was in rare form, as usual.

Slim
