One of the best perks of freelance writing is the monthly opportunity to go
to the Creative Loafing office and raid the CD promo stacks.

This week I picked up a few really interesting things.

Dirty Laundry & More Dirty Laundry - a pair of compilations from Trikont, a
German label, bringing together 48 Country songs performed by Black artists.
The usual suspects are on there, OB McClinton, Solomon Burke, & Stoney
Edwards, but it also features (sort of) country songs by James Brown, James & Bobby
Purify, Joe Tex, Ruth Brown, Bobby Womack, Clyde McPhatter, among others.
Curtis Mayfield does the title track. And it does include an Otis Williams
tune. A lot of it I've heard before, but it's a good listen nevertheless.

Carrie Rodriquez "She Ain't Me" - leaning a bit more "pop" than her past
work, it's a nice record if her voice suits you.

Amos Lee "Last Days at the Lodge" - his third release is an improvement over
the second one, which bored me. Better tunes, nice mellow groove throughout.

John Hiatt "Same Old Man" - I'm not as impressed with this as I thought I
would be after the recent thread on him, but I need to listen more.

Ry Cooder "I, Flathead" - what they said. Very interesting and uniquely Ry
tunes, a fun record to listen to.

The Wrights "In The Summertime" - (this was in my mail) a new 10 song CD
sold at shows and online, all cover songs ranging from Roger Miller's title cut
to Morphine's "In Spite Of Me". I love the Wrights, so I love this one as
well. It's just Adam and Shannon on vocals and guitars.

Loudon Wainwright "Recovery" - rerecorded versions of songs from his back
catalog. Heh.

My favorite new oddity is "This Is Love Psychedelico", a Japanese pop-rock
duo that is a big hit over there, but just now releasing a compilation CD in
the US. I wish I could tell you why I like this so much, but I haven't found a
way to describe it yet. I would call it a Japanese hybrid of American Pop,
not really karaoke, not quite authentic, but unique in it's own way.

I have a few more to check out in the pile, will report back if anything
floats my boat.

Slim
