The Microscore Project is an ongoing collaboration between violinist
Johnny Chang and cellist Jessica Catron that began in December 2001 and
has since led to the commissioning and performance of over 225
miniature works from artists around the world - including distinguished
composers such as Pauline Oliveros, Peter Ablinger, Philip Brownlee,
Harold Budd, and James Tenney. Each piece written for the project is
approximately 30-seconds in duration and the pieces are performed
back-to-back to create a larger "work" that is unique to each concert.
The Microscore Project has attracted the attention of a variety of
artists - from seasoned composers and performers to instrument
builders, poets, graphic designers, performance artists, rock stars,
electronic sound artists, and even a hypnotist. Adventures involving
materials such as glass bottles, wool gloves, Snapple caps, tree
branches, AM/FM radios, and even margaritas are all within the realm of
the microscore palette.
In addition to several premiere pieces written by local Seattle
composers for this program, the selection of microscores for this
performance will be framed by several works from James Tenney's "Postal
Pieces" as well as "Just Another Bagatelle," a duo he composed for the
Microscore Project in 2004. A groundbreaking composer and one of the
foremost music theorists of his generation, James Tenney passed away in
August last year while on faculty at CalArts. This concert is dedicated
in his memory.
The duo will be joined by surprise guests for the finale: James
Tenney's Postal Piece No.6 "Swell Piece No.1" for trio)

Violinist/Composer JOHNNY CHANG is a passionate supporter of new music
that extends far beyond the conventional, commissioning and performing
works by established and emerging composers.
Mr. Chang has worked extensively as a soloist and chamber musician.
Significant among his many projects, is his ongoing involvement with
New Zealand-based contemporary music ensembles Stroma and 175 East. In
December 2002, he performed at Weill Recital Hall, New York City with
Ensemble Sospeso in the Brian Ferneyhough Perspective Concert -
presenting the American premiere of the Ferneyhough String Trio. A few

was invited to perform John Cage’s "19'37.988" for solo violin at
LACMA’s exhibition "Beyond Geometry: Experiments in Form 1940-70s".
More recently, he has been focused on organizing performance
installations at venues such as the Cold Storage Project and Dangerous
Curve Gallery, experimenting with performer dynamics and situations by
presenting creative arrangements, new compositions and open-form
experimental music. Johnny received an MFA in Composition (2006) and
