Arizona-based improviser Jeph Jerman founded animist orchestra in 1999
while living in Seattle. From the outset the group's aim has been to
create, using only unamplified natural objects, a listening environment
that is not based on traditional reasons for making music, such as the
sharing of emotion or the demonstration of instrumental prowess. They
make sound to listen to, intuitively and with the simplest of means -
delicate, extremely quiet, and completely spellbinding. To date they
have released one beautiful CD, wuwei, on Anomalous Records. The
orchestra has since splintered and sub-divided while still managing to
perform sporadically in Seattle, Portland, and Phoenix. For this
performance the orchestra will be greatly expanded to include as many
members as can be available, along with long-time core members Jerman,
Dave Knott, Mike Shannon, Rob Millis, Eric Lanzillotta, Rachael
Jackson, Dean Moore, David Stanford, Matt Shoemaker, and Suzie Kozawa.
This is the first of what we hope will be many Nonsequitur-sponsored
events in the newly renovated Chapel Performance Space at the Good
Shepherd Center in Wallingford. Once a Catholic boarding school for
"wayward girls," it is now owned and maintained by Historic Seattle and
houses numerous non-profit groups and resident artists. The Chapel is
located on the fourth floor and is wheelchair accessible. It is a short
walk from restaurants and bars on 45th Street, and there is plenty of
parking in the lot.
