OK. I've since made it work.
Adding 
SOUP (VENDOR_WRITE_REQUEST_TYPE, 0x20, 0x1311, 0);
into pl2303_open does the trick.

Is there a guide on how to write this simple driver?
Or is there already available, since I guess cheapest homemade
serial readers might be compatible.
